Passionate Woodturner
A not-so-brief history...
My 1st experience in turning wood came in 7th grade shop class (late 1970's) with Mr. Wathen, and I was not very successful for a number of reasons that won't be mentioned...
High school with Mr. Sala was better and I found I liked to turn wood, and I had a better connection with my teacher.
In college, at Western State, in the '80's, is when I really fell in love with wood turning and I found a mentor in my teacher, Mr. Irwin. (RIP) He was the one who encouraged me to try many different projects and attend my first of several woodturning symposiums. I think I bought my 1st lathe (Craftsman) after my freshman year and before graduation I had upgraded to a variable speed Delta. I tried turning as many different varieties of wood as I could get my hands on and that is what started me off as a collector of wood...and I have not stopped for 40 yrs... I may never need to buy wood again in my life, although I probably will ;-)
My old Delta lathe has long been sold and I now turn on a Vicmarc VL300 and will not be needing another upgrade!
I now call myself passionate when it comes to wood and woodturning... I love the hunt for figured wood and burls as I just can't wait to see what I can find hidden beneath the bark!
